Is it possible or worth the expense to re-chrome my 66 qtr panel emblems ($30 for new)and rocker moldings($90 new). Has anyone done it? Is it possible? Any idea on the cost?
Thanks for your time

Sure it is possible, but it seems like originality isnt the main point in your buildup I would go with repo ones for 30 bucks. The price to rechrome old ones is almost guaranteed to be higher.

Can they be cleaned and freshend with new paint or are they pitted pretty bad?

If it is the same price to re-chrome I will re-chrome (orignality). If it is twice the expense I'll start thinking about it. They aren't pitted bad but I don't know how I would go about painting it. If you have any ideas other than a rattle-can, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your reply

You'll definately be happier with the fit and finish of rechroming your originals, plus the finish will last longer. You'll hear from a lot of guys who have installed reproduction chrome, just to have it start to pit and corrode rather quickly.

The rocker moldings aren't chromed, they are anodized. You'll need to find someone who can strip the anodizing and reapply it. The originals are tougher than the repros.

Don't know how much it is for the emblems, but my chrome guy charges $60 for door handles, EACH! Meanwhile you can get a new repro set for $30.

I will be having originals replated for my fastback.

Why? because the last time I put on reproduction door handles they were pitted in about 6 months to a year. Won't take long to realize that you lose money keeping them fresh with new ones, or possibly scratching a nice paint job replacing the door handles multiple times.

Besides, like Scott said, the originals will fit perfect too.

Ouch. I thought it would be $25 dollars or so to chrome BOTH handles or qtr emblems....

Thanks

What about bumpers? I have my originals which are in good condition. Is it better to get them re-chromed or buy new ones? Also, what about the molding around the front and rear winshields? Do those get chromed?

I've got a guy here in Florida that will rechrome bumpers for $300/set. That's pricey because of Florida's laws on that sort of stuff...EPA and all of that.

If you've got a buffing wheel, you should be able to clean up the molding pretty well. They're not chrome.

For quality, rechrome your original bumpers. You know they will fit, and they will look significantly better than a Taiwan chromed bumper.

Front and rear window moldings are stainless, and they get polished, not chromed.

I'm still sorry I sold my original bumpers and bought repops, Nordan, supposed to be the best. Shoulda got the orig's rechromed!
The extra cost would be soon forgotten but the poor quality stares you in the face every day.
The trim moulding is stainless steel, the dents can be worked out and then they are polished, I have also seen them chromed with good results.

Well, the FL quote for bumpers sounds great if they do good work. My guy wants $325 EACH for a bumper. I have had a lot of work done by him and it is absolutely amazing, so for this area I guess the price is worth it.

I have been hearing more and more complaints lately about bumpers of any brand that just don't fit right.

Most places that will do chrome work will also straighten and polish your original stainless too.
