1st I want to say Nice site! I have a 68 coupe with the Ford 347 and it seems to want to vapor lock at the carb. I have tried both the Holley 4777, that came with the engine, and Edelbrock 1406 and they both do it. the holley I tried both the braided dbl line and the chrome line and then switched to the Edelbrock with the chrome line. it still locked up at the carb. then I put on an ugly rubber hose and routed it up and way from the intake and the vapor locking seems to have stopped. Btw I have a 1 inch phenolic spacer on. but I think the problem is the intake. I have an Edelbrock Airgap with the new endurashine coating. any suggestions to fix this problem, so I can go back to the nice lines or should I just go buy a new Airgap that does not have the coating on it? I didnt think that the ceramic coating would cause such a pia but it seems to. and yes I have a new filter and pump and sending unit and the pump puts out about 6-7 lbs and the fuel line from the tank to the front is clear of heat sources. when it locks up I have to open the line let it boil out and then wait 15-20 min and go again. I hope I'm missing something and can fix it with out having to spend the $$ to get a new intake.. and I like the shiney suggestions? Thanks! Ugly 68 Lost Wages, Nevada

I had the same problem The Phenolic spacer and some cooling system upgrades made all the difference for me.Is your engine running hot? Seems like an Airgap manifold and a spacer ought to be enough. I also have a braided stainless fuel line maybe thats keeping it cooler? The main thing that helped me was getting the engine temp under control. Once I had the engine running at 180-190 all the time I was happy.

I tried the braided line with the same result. I do need to add a better temp guage all I have it the basic mustang gauge in there now. As for cooling I have a high flow edelbrock pump with a 4 core rad with distilled water and watter wetter, and a 165 tstat and I only get hot if I sit for 10-15 minutes in traffic but not hot enough to boil over. I'll see about getting a heat gun.

Hey, Lost,Welcome to M&M a really good site with scads of info. If you ask, someone will keep you from making mistakes, like I have. Always put the speedo cable in the transmission before you try to fill it with fluid - otherwise, you gotta clean it up off the floor. ------------------ SkinnyMan Tupelo, MS Thank you, Thank you very much!

Wecome to M&M!Are you using a shroud on your radiator? That'll make a big difference. Also, if you're still using a 4 blade stock fan you'll want to upgrade that as well. What is your timing set at? Too much advance will cause the problems you're describing. [This message has been edited by 69 Sportsroof (edited 11-20-2006).]

Stock style fan shroud. and a 6 blade after market fan. ignition system is a MSD with box and timing is initial 13 to 33 advanced

When I had a 55 Chevy, (yeah, I know) I used a "cool can" made out of an old coffee can with copper tubing coiled inside of it. It was mainly used for cooling between rounds with ice water.I had a similar problem with my 65 coupe many years ago, but the electric fuel pump cured that one. ------------------ fsm

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HLY% 2D108%2D70&N=700+300701+115&autoview=sku You could try using a heat shield between the carb and intake. It may reflect enough heat away from the fuel line(s) to stop the vapor lock. Welcome to M&M ! Try reversing your dual feed line on the Holley so the fuel pump line enters at the rear. Put that Jimmy Carter carb on your front porch and plant some flowers in it. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I thought about using a heat shield but I wanted to try not to 1st. I take the car to the track once in a while but I show it too and I didn't want to cover stuff up As for turning the fuel line around... It never even crossed my mind!! I'll have to try it. I didn't even think that would work, figured it would mess up the fuel delivery somehow. Thanks for the idea! Here is a link to a few photos if you want to see the car.. and no thats Aluminum and Ceramic only Chrome is the Export brace and Monte bar Photos here

Welcome to Mustangsandmore, thats a very nice looking car and the motor looks awesome! As for the fuel line you could just go get some hard line. Bend it to where it's out of the way and your done. Hard line is real easy to work with as long as you take your time and make small bends, test fit bend some more etc!

Aha, I see your problem. Your engine bay is too clean. Mine has a dust build up which acts as a heat sync, also those three buns are also adding to the heat problem. ------------------ fsm

Thanks, I like the car. I'll try moving the line to the back and I noticed that the fan is not quite halfway into the shroud its only in about an 1/8th of an inch so I'll see about getting a spacer to push it in some more. And I like a clean engine bay.. that way I can tell whats leaking..it is a ford after all ------------------ Show And Go Association
