Again...I've got a '65 fastback (as much as I say that, everyone should know by now) and I'm working on the interior while I save up for the paint job. I was inspecting all of the fold down seat trim and it's really nasty looking. In some places, the chrome is gone or peeling. I had another silly idea and wanted to know what everyone thinks.First, know that this car is going to be a restomod clone of a white GT-350H, and I'm not concerned what the purists think about the car. I'm not wanting to duplicate an "H" (Hope I didn't offend anyone). Plus, I can't dish out $200 for new trim. It's just not worth the money in my head. Anyway, how should I strip or sand down these trim pieces so they can be painted or powder coated? I've got simple tools, nothing pneumatic...just elbow grease. Would a liberal coat of filler primer smooth these things out? Oh, they're going to be semi-gloss black to offset the black carpet. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I struggled with the cost of a few things too while I was rebuilding. The last thing I purchased for my pony was the $396.00 steering wheel. That hurt, however, the compliments I get from individuals that look at this car is worth it. I think I'm over the cost now with what people are saying about my car, which is good. I would try to come up with the $200.00 to make to right. Or, paint it and see how it comes out, you can always replace it at a later date. I've been sanding the stuff out of these trim pieces and it's not doing any good. I wonder if these things would hold up to a blaster. I'll need a different medium than sand I'm sure.

Okay, if anyone was curious what it would look like having black trim around your fold-down seat, here you go:www.treasurecoastmustangs.com/edproject/ed-carpet4.jpg I took a burnishing wheel (?) to scuff and smooth each trim piece. They were then primed and painted. The only disadvantage is they scratch very easy. I'll end up stripping them and having them powdercoated. But at least now I know.

Thanks for the compliments.I finished up the seat and put the piano hinge on. It looks amazing. I'll have to snap a photo of it to share with everyone.
