about to start on the '65 and I have an exhaust routing question.

Running a 289, with long tube headers (Hooker).....I'm planning on a 40 series Flowmaster (because I like the sound)....and I want the exhaust to turn out IN FRONT of the rear wheels (both sides)......

am I going to have to make the exhaust do some funky "S" shape to get back in front of the wheels ???.....my concern is how the mufflers will "fit" under the car (read: ground clearance, etc)

suggestions ?

I don't think so. I think you can get the mufflers with the inlet and outlet on the same side so you can set it up the way you are talking about. Summit has them.

Richard.

So you want something like this?

I'll be doing this to mine. The idea came from an AAR Cuda I did some work on. It's much better than using straight pipes with glasspacks.

By 'supplier', you mean Alex of course?

He's doing a Magnaflow system for my 66 GT A code.

$189? There's got to be a cheaper muffler out there somewhere! I think Flowmaster does make them, but I haven't looked into it yet. My friend used transverse type mufflers designed for Camaros, Firebirds, etc., and closed up one end. They weren't the prettiest, since there was a welded plug showing when you looked under the rear of the car, but they sure sounded good.

well......by supplier, I mean the downtown Midas shop......AND HERE'S MY REASON (better talk fast).......

I'm going to build this car to LOOK like a vintage race car......with all the graphics and logos, numbers, etc.....Midas has been in buisiness since the 50's here in Nashville.....I spoke with the owner here and they've got some advertising money to spend, so they agreed that if I put a vintage (1965 era) Midas logo, with their address (which would still be vintage)....they would do my exhaust for FREE !......

you gotta admit, free is a pretty hard price to beat .......the only catch is that I have to use parts/pieces that they have in stock.......

they're closed for the holiday weekend...but I should know something on Monday....

BTW......I checked flowmaster's website....didn't see anything that was made like that.....anyone got a Flowmaster part number (Magnaflow is cool, but I'm hooked on the Flowmaster sound).........

Okay, I found this on Flowmaster's site. It's an 80 Series muffler with 2 1/2 in and out on the same side. The model number is 52580.

http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34_156&products_id=3325

Here's Flowmaster's straight through design. Then you could do something like the '65 Shelbys.

The way the muffler companies and exhaust shops identify those mufflers is having in/out on the same end. If you tell the shop you want the in/out on the same side, they'll get you one that comes in on the left side in front and goes out on the left side in the rear.
There's a front end, a back end, a left side and a right side, and some have pipes that are 'center in/out' like glasspacks.

If you have to order and pay for a muffler, consider giving Alex a shot at it. Otherwise, your FREE deal seams pretty sweet!

If you get the exhaust system from Midas, you could also get Ravin Z55 mufflers. They are sold by Midas. I have them on my coupe (dual exhaust) and they sound great. If Midas still sells them, of course.

I put 2.5" Summit Turbo's on my 289. It sounds awesome. I get a lot of compliments. Summit Racing.

Two answers to your question sir, and you probably already know both those answers!

1) It depends on what you want
( diameter of pipe, type of muffler, x-pipe, h-pipe, for headers or for manifolds, with chrome tips, stainless tips, no tips, with header dumps, etc, etc)

and

2) you should probably be asking him! LOL

Scott,

You are so right... LOL. I don't know what I was thinking. I will ask Alex when the time comes.

Thanks.

Richard.
