Are these highway gears?
I placed a piece of tape on the drive shaft, rolled the car 1 revolution of the rear tires. The drive shaft rotated 3 times to the 1 rotation of the tire.
Highway gears?

Almost.
They are the most common FoMoCo middle of the road semi performance gears.
3.00 to 1 ratio.

2.41 is what I would call "highway" gears.

Thanks for the reply.
This Pony will probably go 140mph, however, it won't smoke um off the line. What type of rear end/gear ratio would you recommend?
I've also been told I might have too much tire in the rear. That's okay, they look great. I'd rather have a quicker car than a top end car. What do you think?

3:55's with a Locker. You will feel a big difference. You will also need a speedo gear change when you swap them, or live with it being off by about 10 mph, either way, it's well worth it.

I am running 3.25"s in my 66 with 235-60-14 tires and have no problems with smoking the tires any time that I feel like.

I agree with Coop on the 3.55s. My 66 came with 3.89s and they were a little steep without an over drive. I swaped them for some 3.50s and was much happier. Now that I installed a 5spd I may switch back to the to the 3.89s. My 65 has 3.00s witch is great for crusing with a C4 but lacks any off-line excitment. You might consider buying a complete pumpkin. That way you can change them without much hassle.

Do you really want to ask a guy who uses 6.20 gears in his race car what he likes in a street car?

Anything under a 3.89 is pretty much girlyman in my book.

LOL! I'm already running about 3k rpms at 65-70 mph in 2.80 gears. I couldn't run 30 mph with those monstor gears!

I too started with highwya gears 2.79,then I went to some 3.41 gears. Better off the line and the rpm's were at 3000 @ 70mph. Next I went to 3.91 gears WOW what a big difference they made. I will never go back! So what if at 3000rpm I'm at 60 mph. I drive a little slower on the highway and much faster at the track.

Scoop has gears!

Unlike some other girlymen around here who never had the balls to get any in their 68.

Looks like I need to bust out the lace panties and bra... I have 2.90s in my 65 with a Five speed tranny. I have a 9" rear in my car and the previous gear set up made first useless.
I am not sure what kind of rear end it had,but
when shifting from one gear to another it seemed felt like the ass end of the car was shifting to the side. Then it felt like it would lock in. Some kind of locker?

I'm not girly , I'm a metro male....

Dont forget tire size is a big factor.
some of these ratios sound crazy, but racers run much larger tires (like 29 inch slicks)

The ratio you choose must take tire size into account. 26 inch tires instead of 24 inch tires will make 3.25 gears feel like 3.00 gears. Giant 29 inch slicks make a 6:1 ratio run like a 5:1 ratio would on 24 inch tires.

Assuming you have tires between 24 and 25 inches and youre on the highway a bunch without an overdrive I think a 3.55 is a great compromise. If you have a C4 automatic and you were to go to a 3.90+ ratio it would be like being stuck in 2nd gear. if you want to know what highway driving would be like try driving it around with it in 2nd gear. That will let you "test" the highway feel of these big ratios.

I have a C-4 and 3.91 gears with 25" tall tires. I can't agree that it seems like your second gear all the time. As a matter of fact there is still times I wish I had more gear. I've found that the small Ford motor love the RPM's.
Driving around town in 3rd gear even at 55mph you forget that you have gears, until you hit the loud pedal.

I might join the NTMC for the Richardson Parade this Saturday. Larry, and you? I just got this car running and getting it on the hwy during busy hours makes me crazy. Everyone wants to run in to this car it seems. I'd like to come up on a Sunday perhaps. Let me know if you're doing the parade thing and we'll discuss further.
Thanks!

I won't be doing the parade. Sunday sounds good unless I am fixing broken pipes from the freeze.

It's 8:00, the cold front got here a half an hour ago. The temp dropped fast. I winterized last night. Hopefully you'll be okay. You'll get more junk than us I'm sure. Good luck and we'll discuss more about Sunday. Let us know how many inches of ice you have in the morning.

So far my only weather related emergency was when a beer started to freeze after opening it.

One word of warning! These cars are addicting. With this one finished, what are you going to do next?

The only emergency here in Dallas is that I was able to get to the office. That sucked.
There's still a few things I need to do to this car. It will keep me busy for a little longer.
How bout Sunday, me heading up north for a couple of beers?
Give me a shout back.

Richard
