I am afraid to total up what I have spent on mine!

Use the original parts where you can. This will save you quite a bit. (ex. Fenders.) If they can be fixed or repaired / patched use the originals. They fit better than repos anyway.

Start off buying what you need first and maybe make a list of the order in which to buy things. For example, don't buy interior stuff until you have good floor pans in the car. Stuff just gets in the way and ties up your money when you're not ready for it.

I spent a lot of time planning on my last project (66 coupe) and things went a whole lot easier and faster. I didn't spend any time re-doing things.

Good luck. You will get to where you want to be. It just takes time and patience.

I agree with FSTBK65 he made some vert good points.
Buy the parts you want/need the first time and you'll save a ton of money.
I stopped adding it up once it got past the point of no return.
My 65 is still less the half the price of fast new car. And a heck of a lot more fun to drive.

I figured (probably wrong) that if I ordered everything I KNOW I'm going to need at one time, that I would save money by negotiating a discount with the parts supplier.......

true / not true ???

edit: I have plenty of attic/basement space

I did the same. I made a list of things I knew I would need then called the supplier and before I even ordered I asked if I would get a discount for a large order.
Figured why not worse they would say was no.
but I ordered 3k worth of parts and they discounted 500 and I got a discounted shipping fee also.
So it never hurts to ask.
As for THE LIST....
well.. I stopped worring about the totals.
I just order as I need things, and tell me self its cheaper and better then other habbits
Also don't for get the little things, seals, plugs,t's. I have found that if I look at a manual when I plan to fix something it will remind me of little junk I would have forgotten to order.
Make SURE to check your large order as soon as you get it too. Open everything and make sure its right, even if you don't plan on using it right away. Its hard to return the wrong part several months after you ordered it.

I've owned my 65 since 1972, if I had every penny back that I've spent on it I could probably by an Island in the Pacific and retire.

I've got about 1/3 of a new car price (07 Roush)invested so far, and hopefully this winter I can get them on the car. I'm still way ahead of what we paid for the Jeep too.

thinking of skipping the list and taking the car to a custom restomod shop. one stop shopping. min price for any complete pack is going to be very high.

But then it is not about the money is it?

LOL.

You know what they say "if you need to ask the price...." My restoration was exactly like you guys said - twice the time and twice the price that I budgeted.

I have way too much into her but I wouldn't trade her for the world........

I don't think I ever regreted spending money to get my cars the way I wanted. Most of my regretes came from not doing them the way I wanted the first time. 10 years from now the list will look cheap.

After seeing this list, I was wondering about my own car 65 Fastback and what I actually have into it so far, so I called Cathy and asked her to get all the receipts and add them up including purchase price and all the nickle and dime stuff you buy for the car.

Well when she finally added everything up and gave me the total I was floored, so far I have $52,000.00 into the car, I had no idea that I have spent so much on it.

I doubt that I will ever get that back out of it but I have no intention of selling it and besides that amount is spread out over a 6 year period so it is not so bad, about $8650.00 per year, I can live with that.
