If my car sits for any length of time, I have to pump the accelerator many many times to get it to fire up. Howver, if I start it every couple of days, it starts right up. I figure that the fuel in the fuel line is draining back into the tank and that I need a check valve in line somewhere to prevent this but where is the question. Outlet of fuel pump, inlet of fuel pump or outlet of gas tank? 289 with a holley mechanical fuel pump.------------------ Alan 66 Fastback 99 GT Convertible

Had a friend who's 64.5 had that same problem. After changing fuel pump twice, he found it to be the rubber fuel line going from the steel one to the fuel pump. It had pin holes in it.

My 67 started doing the same thing this summer. I'm thinking it has something to do with all the ethonal they are putting in the gas now. I think it may have affected the needle and seat in the carb, and it is slowly seeping past the seat. Also heard it evaporates much faster. The carb fuel bowl should stay full for quite a while, so if it is empty from leakage, you have to crank the starter long enough to fill the bowl to start the engine. Actually you are probably evaporating the fuel out of the carb when you shut if off hot and it sits for a couple of days. Quick fix would be to install a small electric fuel pump at the tank. Turn the key on, let the pump fill the bowls and go. Purolator makes a small cheap one that will work in series with your mechanical pump.
