I use stock painted blue valve covers, chemically strip the paint, then have them chromed. The turn out near perfect, which of course isn't absolutely correct because the originals had a blurry reflection to them, but the quality was top drawer and the cost was about $120.

I've done the same process to make the chrome twist-in oil filler cap also.

Starting with painted parts gives you a smoother finish for the chromer to work with.

That's pretty expensive for a steel re-pop.
I wonder where they are being made?

Probably because most of the originals are rusted, scratched or dented or all of the above. I didn’t think that was that high of a price. I actually thought it was quite reasonable considering that it a totally new cover set with better than new chrome and it’s the first run.
