Any body know what happened to Barry Poole from Canada? He use to race S/S Muatangs in NHRA in the '70's. I would like to see pictures of his cars. They had the Zebbra strips on the rear quater panels.

Barry is still racing IHRA Super Stock with a beautiful orange Thunderbird.Go to the IHRA website then to national event photos from 2004 0r 2005 for The Mopar parts Canadian nationals in Grand Bend. Or go to
www.fastpixs.com select image galleries, then 2004 images, then Grand Bend Motorplex images, then scroll down till you see September 11th Thunder points day there is a pic of a flamed Camaro. Go to page 15 of this gallery and you will see Barry's orange T-Bird. Check out the rest of the site lots of cool cars, Grand Bend is my home track....enjoy!

My life long childhood hero is alive and well as stated running the IHRA trail.
I realized a dream by beating Barry up in Toronto in 2004.
Too bad Barry can't run NHRA with his 460 powered stick shift SS/GT T-Bird.

I have never heard a guy row a 4 speed like Barry. He shifts so fast and so smooth you would think it's an automatic. Does he still wear his straw hat? And thanks for the link.

Based on him starting his career in 1964 I would say mid 60's.

Well Alex,
Then I guess there's hope for me yet...Because at the rate I've been going, it'll take me that long (into my mid 60's) to get my '69FB finished the way I want it!

I'm not sure if that should make me or

Ryan

Try doing a search on the "Border Bandits".That would be Mr Poole and Sandy Elliot. If I remember correctly I think Sandy's dad owned the ford dealership that spondered the cars?...I met Barry Poole quite a few years back at an all ford drag race.He was running a black 68 1/2 CJ mustang at the time.

GT rules stipulate any "car" engine and trans combo that was available from the factory in any "car" or truck.
Ya ever seen a 460 T-Bird, or LTD with a stick?

Not on this planet.

It's really stupid on NHRA's part.
You can run any car combo in any truck, but you can't run a truck combo in a car.
If they allowed that, I would have built a SS/GT Fox with a Lightning motor in a hearbeat. 250 HP factor with an automatic.
Same engine in a 95 Cobra R is stick only and at 300 HP.

I suppose the logic is to keep people from building 4 speed 74 Lincoln Town Cars and exciting the fans too much so they'll be bored when the Pro cars run.

I've heard they plan to do away with the tranny rule, i would welcome that as way to run a stick behind anything but i'm afraid it would probably mean lame combos like Boss302/Cruise-O-Matic.

YEAH BABY!! I can see it now - I envision the pits full of early 70's Town Cars with big, steamroller fatties tucked under the butt end. They pull into the box, do one hel!va long burn out, then stage up - the launch - and we all get ta see the color of their driveshaft loops via their 3-4ft wheelstand on every pass!

But then, like you said TomP, then EVERYONE would want to build one, the prices for manual trans and their parts would go even higher, and the PRO guys would be crying because they'd be held from running until Monday AMs... , and the universe would stop spinning, and,,,,,, WHEW! - I guess it was all just a dream!
