Okay I am getting real lucky with my car.So far my transmission matches my cars vin number and behind the cylinder head it matches to.My question is there any where on the 390 block that I can look for a vin number.Did they put a vin number on the block to?If they did where do I look? Also where else on the car is there vin numbers, like is there one on the rear end?I already know about the ones under the fenders. Thanks Dave

Try on Drivers side just below the head. That is where mine is on my 71. On the eariler models it was alond the drip rail above the oil pan.

I was not aware that the 390 blocks were stamped with the VIN, but on my 428 CJ engines, the partial VIN is normally stamped on the back of the block, on the drivers side, just below the head gasket surface, on a small rectangular pad. My 71 429SCJ block is also stamped in the same area.In the vehicle, it is almost impossible to see, even with the engine out, it normally takes some dilligent cleaning, as the numbers are not stamped very deeply, and a couple of coats of paint could easily fill the characters in.

Okay thanks guy's,I will have to look. But I know where you all are talking about.I've looked at that rectangular pad before and it looks like nothing is stamped on it.I will have to clean it and I will see if I will get anything. We had to do the same thing with my dad's pontiac engine it must be stamped like them.Lucky for me,my engine and transmission is already out of the car. Thanks guy's Dave

I cleaned that retangular pad and sure enough nothing came up.But where can I find the number on the block that looks something like C5ME,C6ME,or C7ME.My date code on my block looks like it says 9A10.But if I can find out where that C7ME number is.I will know for sure if it is a 60's block. Thanks Dave

It's on the passenger side of the block on the water jacket above where the starter is located.

I don`t doubt that at all, however, we were refering to FE engines, which most I`ve seen don`t have a partial VIN. The 428 CJ`s I`ve had (and still own) have the VIN where I mentioned. However, I have never seen a 390 with the VIN stamped into the block.

I also have never seen the vin # on a 390 block.I have seen partial's on the heads but not the blocks.

It is common to find the numbers on 428CJ/SCJ's and Boss cars but I have found its usually just the heads that are stamped.

I just the engine back in a 72 Pantera and it actually had a complete 70 Mustang vin stamped on the block.
You never know..
