A guy put an ad in Sunday paper for a 1970 Cougar, not an XR with newly built motor,(352C),breaks, tranie and suspension. The ad was in the normal Mercury section as opposed to the classic car section. He was asking 3grand so I called and he only lives two miles from me. I went and saw it immediately. It needs a new interior, tires and paint. Body is clean with no dents and no rust whatsoever. The car is forest green. He said his wife wants it out of her site,(she who must be obeyed) the car has been sitting over a year. Btw, he owns a garage door opener company and mine just broke the other day. I said I would give him 2grand and he said sold. Then I said if I by a new garage door opener would you install it for free? He said done deal. He also gave me a bunch of receipts on the car plus an extra C-4 tranie. I drove it home and it drove real good and the oil was like new. I will probably be asking alot of questions about things. The car is going to be for the wife and she is purrring real nice right now.

Sounds like you have a better wife than the previous owner does.

Did you mean the car or the wife is purring?
Either way, sounds like both are keepers!!!

actually the wife purrrrsss alot better. Now I have a couple of questions. I let my wife drive it yesterday and when she pulled into the driveway she engaged the emergency break. I come out this morning and I try to dis-engage the brake but there is no handle under the dash? What can I do? I searched underneath the dash and there was nothing. One more thing, I tried pusing the break with my foot again hoping it's the kind that self releases, it's not? Any advice? Funny how you miss these things when you check out the car at the buying?

Lastly, where can I get a dash pad? There are just too many cracks in the original one. Thanks for all your replies.

howdy james:

the brake release for my 69 is a pull-release under the dash, left of the steering wheel ....... it is a slim line..... maybe the 't-handle' end is missing making it an elusive release?

..... give a search under the dash for a line without the chrome handle and see if you can locate it.....

It sounds like the whole brake release arm is gone - that happened on the 70 I used to have. A temporary fix is to get a coat hanger and wire it down to where the release arm would connect. If you get a flashlight and look around you can find where to release the brake, but be careful that your finger isn't in the way (don't ask how I know)

Good luck!
