OK, it's a 97 Taurus, 3.0/auto. She said the A/C quit working, and the serpentine belt broke. If the compressor is locked up, will the pulley still spin anyway, and if not, how can I test the water pump??? I feel bad because I told her it was the alternator the first time, but I put a new one on, and it's still frying the belt. I only saw it for a few seconds, but it looked like the A/C pulley was spinning OK. Any suggestions, like I said, I kinda feel responsible to get it running, free labor/parts exchange. Thanks, any time and info is greatly appreciated.

William,

Pull the belt off and reaxh down and spin the pulleys by hand, including the tensioner, and they should all spin free. If the water pump spins free and is not leaking out the weep hole then it should be fine. Yes the A/C pulley will spin even with the compressor locked up as long as the A/C is turned off. Also check your belt routing to ensure it is correct, it is very easy to get the belt on wrong.

The clutch would have to be engaged to burn the belt. If you go to defrost, the ac will be on,also on the blend position.

Thanks Mike, I think she got someone else to see what they can find, but I'll pass this along too, just in case they overlook the obvious like I did .
